Restorative Yoga

Restorative yoga focuses on healing the body by stretching, lubricating, and rejuvenating connective tissues including tendons, ligaments, bones, joints, and fascia. Based on the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar, a restorative yoga sequence typically involves a handful of poses, each passively held for an extended period of time with the support of props and the utilization of gravity.

Physiologically, this gentle practice shifts practitioners from their sympathetic nervous systems’ “fight or flight” reaction and activates their parasympathetic nervous systems’ “rest and resolve” response. This rearrangement encourages immune function, promotes stress relief, increases mobility, prevents injuries, stimulates healing, nourishes the body, and calms and clears the mind for a deeply meditative state.

Taking into account each practitioner’s personal anatomical structure and alignment, restorative yoga is suitable for adults of all ability levels, races, genders, religions, sexual orientations, and national origins.
