Mail Art
Mail Art is the written word movement that originated at the Ray Johnson's New York Correspondence School in the 1950's. Since its conception, the project has established a worldwide presence connecting artists, writers, friends, students, and families. The program encourages creativity, literacy, collaboration, invention, communication, inclusion, artistic expression, and global networking.
The Mail Art Process is Simple!
1. Sign up for the Mail Art Program
2. Be paired with a correspondent
3. Create an original art piece for your partner. The message can include anything that fits inside an envelope ~ such as a handwritten letter, postcard, collage, painting, drawing, photograph, or recycled image
4. Mail your artwork to the address provided
5. Upon arrival, the other participant will change, add to, manipulate, or rearrange the existing work of art and send the altered message back to you.
6. Transform the message that was returned, again
7. Repeat steps four through six indefinitely
8. When it is time to create a new conversation, save your masterpiece somewhere special to remember the unique exchange
